Growth plates are located at the end of long bones and are responsible for lengthening of the bones. The open growth plates look like black lines on x- ray growth plate exam.

WHEN DO GROWTH PLATES CLOSE?

The closure of growth plates starts during the peripubertal age which is 12-14 years old in girls and 14-16 in boys. Precocious puberty (Developing puberty signs early) can arrest height prematurely by closing growth plates too soon.
